FAQs

Is it right for me?

Breast reduction is a highly individualised procedure and may not be suitable for everyone. Dr Preketes will assess your condition and general health, and plan the treatment that is best suited to you.

Breast reduction may be a good option for you if:

  • You are physically healthy
  • You have realistic expectations
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large
  • Your breasts limit your physical activity
  • You experience back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • You have regular indentations from bra straps that support heavy, pendulous breasts
  • You have skin irritation beneath the breast crease
  • Your breasts hang low and have stretched skin
  • Your nipples rest below the breast crease when your breasts are unsupported
  • You have enlarged areolas caused by stretched skin

Remember that the shape and size of your breasts before surgery will influence the surgical procedure and the outcome.

Is there a Medicare rebate available?

There are potential rebates from Medicare and Health Insurance pending you meet certain. You will need to have a consultation to confirm.

Can I undergo Breast Reduction with other surgeries at the same time?

In many cases, it is possible to undergo multiple cosmetic procedures at the same time depending on the other treatment and your surgeon’s recommendation. Combining procedures can reduce overall recovery time and minimise anaesthesia sessions.

How much down time is needed?

After breast reduction, most people need 4 weeks off from work, with the ability to resume light activities. Full recovery usually takes about 6 weeks.

What are the risks?

All surgery carries potential risks and complications such as infection, scarring, and allergic reactions. Choosing an experienced surgeon and discussing potential risks can help minimise these concerns. For a more extensive list of Risks and Complications that relate to Breast Reduction, please see our Patient Resources.

Is the procedure painful?

While surgery itself is not painful due to anaesthesia, there may be some discomfort during the recovery process. Pain levels vary depending on the procedure, but Dr Preketes will provide pain management options to help minimise discomfort during healing.
