Breast Augmentation

Feel comfortable and confident in your own skin

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic or reconstructive procedure used to enhance breast size and shape. In cases such as breast reconstruction following cancer treatment or to correct congenital abnormalities, it serves a restorative purpose. The choice of implant size is influenced by factors including breast anatomy, skin thickness, elasticity, and overall body proportions.

Breast Implants

Dr Preketes uses silicone implants. The implant envelope is filled with an elastic gel that feels more like natural breast tissue. Implants can be placed behind between the breast tissue and the chest muscle, or behind the large chest muscle called the pectoralis major. Each position has its advantages and disadvantages. Dr Preketes will provide further details after your assessment during consultation and will recommend which position is likely to be most suitable for you.

FAQs

Is it right for me?

Breast augmentation is a highly individualised procedure and may not be suitable for everyone. Dr Preketes will assess your condition and general health, and plan the treatment that is best suited to you.

Breast augmentation may be a good option for you if:

  • You are physically healthy
  • You have realistic expectations
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
  • You are dissatisfied with your breasts losing shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or with aging
  • Your breasts vary in size or shape
  • One or both breasts failed to develop normally

Remember that the shape and size of your breasts before surgery will influence the surgical procedure and the outcome

Is there a Medicare rebate available?

Unfortunately, as Breast Augmentation is classed as an elective surgery there are no rebates available.

Can I undergo Breast Augmentation with other surgeries at the same time?

In many cases, it is possible to undergo multiple cosmetic procedures at the same time depending on the other treatment and your surgeon’s recommendation. Combining procedures can reduce overall recovery time and minimise anaesthesia sessions.

How much down time is needed?

After breast augmentation, most people need 2 weeks off from work, with the ability to resume light activities. Full recovery usually takes about 6 weeks.

What are the risks?

General risks and complications

All surgeries have potential risks and complications that can arise. Some generalised risks are:

  • Risks of anaesthesia including allergic reaction or potentially fatal cardiovascular complications such as heart attack
  • A blood clot in the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis), which can move to the lungs (pulmonary embolus) or to the brain and may be life threatening
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Allergic reaction to suture materials, tape adhesive or other medical materials and lotions if experienced can cause a delay in healing

For a more extensive list of Risks and Complications that relate to Breast Augmentation, please see our Patient Resources.

Is the procedure painful?

While surgery itself is not painful due to anaesthesia, there may be some discomfort during the recovery process. Pain levels vary depending on the procedure, but Dr Preketes will provide pain management options to help minimise discomfort during healing.
